Why did Christ have to die? What was the point of his death? Why did he resurrect?The answers to these questions are vital if we want to deepen our faith. We must be able to answer these questions confidently to give testimony to our faith. This time, we will answer these questions to deepen our faith and give us better understanding of Christ’s death and resurrection.
First off, we must realize that we have all sinned and when we sin, the punishment is death. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death”, Romans 3:23 says, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. Since we have all sinned and we deserve death, to be able to be reconciled with God, something or somebody has to make atonement for our wrongs. And that somebody is Jesus Christ.
The old law was a shadow of what was to come in the form of Jesus. Hebrews 10:1 tells us that. Because it was only a shadow and not the real thing, “it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.” (Hebrews 10:4). Therefore, since their blood cannot take away sins, we still remain separated from God. Hence, the coming of the Messiah to sacrifice once and for all.
The death of Jesus brought shedding of blood, and through this blood, we are able to be forgiven. Ephesians 1:7 says, “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace”. 1 John 1:7 says, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” The blood of Jesus cleanses us from all unrighteousness. The blood of Christ allows us to be forgiven of all our sins and without the death of Jesus, none of this would be possible.
The resurrection of Jesus also brings us something we need. Justification. Romans 4:25 says, “He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification. Justification, in this setting, means to make or set right. God raised Jesus from the dead to prove that God had won the victory and we can have hope of eternal life with Him. Romans 5:18 says “…so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men.” 1 Corinthians 15:20 proves that since Jesus was raised from the dead, those who have died yet followed Him will rise to eternal life when he comes. Therefore, the resurrection of Christ brings eternal life to those who obey Him.
In conclusion, the death and shed blood of Christ brings forgiveness of sins. The resurrection of Christ brings justification and eternal life. Without the resurrection, there is no eternal life, and we would still be lost in our sins. But thanks be to God that Jesus died for our sins and raised him to life so that we could have the hope of enjoying eternal life.
